What to ask your kid before the rental or shop visit

A one-page checklist in kid words. It turns “my feet hurt” or “I can’t turn” into words the shop can use. Bindings, release settings and safety kit are the shop’s job; the checklist doesn’t touch them.

What is on the page

What to ask your kid, what they might say, and what to tell the shop
AskIf they say…Tell the shop
"Do your feet feel okay in the boots?""My feet hurt"Feet hurt soon after the boots go on. Say where: toes, sides, heel or top of the foot.
"Stand up straight and wiggle your toes. Do they touch the end?""My toes touch the end"Toes touch the front of the boot when standing. Ask how much room is right with the liner in.
"Are your toes cold or tingly?""My toes are cold" or "I can't feel them"Toes go cold or numb in the boots. Ask the shop to check the fit is not too tight. If it does not go away out of the boots, see a physio.
"Does your foot slide about when you bend your knees?""My heel comes up" or "My foot moves"Heel lifts or the foot moves inside the boot. Ask whether the boot is too big or the wrong shape.
"Can you bend forward in the boots?""I can't bend my knees" or "My legs go wobbly"Boot feels too stiff to bend, or too soft to hold them. Give their weight and how many days they have skied.
"Can you carry your skis to the snow?""They're heavy"Skis feel heavy to carry and to move. Ask how weight and length compare with their size.
"Stand the skis up next to you. Where do they come to?""They're really long" or "They're too short"Give height, weight and skiing level. Ask how the shop chooses length, and why.
"Can you point the skis where you want to go?""I can't turn"Struggles to start a turn. Give their level and ask whether ski length or boot fit is part of it.
"Do you feel steady standing and sliding on the flat?""I wobble"Feels unsteady on the flat. Ask whether boot fit or ski length could be the cause.
"Will these fit you next season?" (a parent question, not one for the kid)Hand-me-downs, or "a bit big so I can grow"Say how fast they are growing and how old the gear is. Ask what growth room is sensible, and what is too much.

Pain or an injury? See a physio. Not medical advice. Bindings, DIN settings and safety equipment are set by the shop, not by this page. Edge Lab does not give gear advice for children.
